Introduction:
Nationally appropriate frameworks are necessary to promote the innovation in all socio-economic sectors of any country to meet the challenges of sustainable development needs. The Ministry of Environment has established a National Green Reporting System (NGRS) with a view to promote reporting of sustainability performance in manufacturing and services sectors in 2011. The National Green Reporting System in Sri Lanka (NGRS) has been developed based on the Green Reporting Initiatives (GRI) G3 Guidelines (the third generation of guidelines of GRI) and the ISO 26000 standard on guidance for social responsibility. Green Reporting is an effective communication tool for transmission of information on the suatinability performances of the organization. The National Green Reporting System comprises of fifty (50) indicators encompassing twenty four (24) environmental, twenty (20) social and six (06) economical indicators. The Guidelines for the National Green Reporting System in Sri Lanka was launched on 17th June 2011 and the 1st team of the entities was enrolled in the National Green Reporting System in Sri Lanka. The reporting system provides five Tiers that the industry/company/entity could select one of those for reporting. Applications are called for the 2nd team of NGRS from those who are interesting to enter the National Green Reporting System in Sri Lanka until 15th July, 2012. NGRS 1st Anniversary – Progress Review will be held in August, 2012.
