"Pilisaru" Waste Management programme
Lack of national approach in solid waste management has brought about tremendous negative environmental consequences. In order to remedy this situation a program named "Pilisar Waste Management Programme" has been initiated to establish Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) program in the country. Through this programme the Ministry has established a platform to bring all relevant stakeholders together to implement a cohesive national programme to address waste management issues in the country.

"Piyakaru Purawara" Green Cities Programme
The Green Cities - "Piyakaru Purawara" Programme is a Cabinet approved environment programme jointly implemented by the Ministry of Environment, CEA and Local Authorities. The programme is mainly concentrated on keeping the cities clean and beauty. The programme is enriched with number of vital components namely awareness creation, solid waste management, urban greenary, tree cover improvement and canal rehabilitation. Fifty three (53) Local Authorities (LAs) have joined this programme so farand contributed a lot for the development of collective effort, strengthen the inter agency coordination & cooperation at the grass root level to achieve the common objective "keep the cities clean and beauty". Identification of problems which are connected to the city cleaning have been completed by all 53 Local Authorities. Out of 53 LAs 23 have completed the first and the second steps of this programme.

"Ran Derana" Programme
This programme has been initiated to identify alternatives for river sands, meet the sand requirements with the available sands as well as to give maximum value addition locally to the minerals that are being exported. In order to meet these objectives Mineral Investigation Unit has been established at GSMB and four types of minerals ; Vein quartz, dimension stones, mica, Iron ore have been identified in this regard. A study has also been carried out to assess how the value addition has been brought in and a draft Mineral Investment Agreement has been finalized. Stakeholder consultations in this regard are being conducted to implement this programme.

"Wana Senasuna" Programme
The purpose of this programes is to involve the Budhist Clergy and devotees for protecting the forests with cultural values,
- Under the programme identified forest areas with biodiversity values and cultural values are allocated to establish Aranyas.
- It integrates religious and cultural aspects into forest conservation to enhance the protection afforded to these areas. The presence of Buddhist Priests and the pilgrims who come to Aranyas for religious activities will help to prevent any illegal activities in the area.
- Disseminating the message of the value of forest conservation to the people through pilgrims.

This programme has been initiated with the main objectives to,

- Minimize environmental degradation.
- Conserve village biodiversity.

"Jeewa Jawaya" Programme
Bio diesel can be taken as a substitute for, or an additive to diesel fuel, which is derived from oils and fats of plants like Jatropha crucas. As a substitute for fast depleting fossil fuels, bio diesel has come to stage.ln future it should also serve to reduce and maintain the price of automobile fuel. Under exploited and unexploited vegetable oils are good source of bio fuel.Our country is endowed with many such plants and Jatropha crucas is considered as one of the best option.
