Caring for the Environment for Sustainable Development

Mankind's relationship with nature has gone through several years and the increasing mastery over nature and rapid material-intensive growth has replaced the human's state of symbiosis with nature. The natural environment has been used as a 'dump' for all man made wastes and the resulting environmental problems like pollution have caused irreversible damage to the natural environment. Environmental problems are new threatening the very existence of human life on earth.

In the context of Sri Lanka, the Ministry of Environment is vested with the responsibility of making policies and programs that minimize environmental degradation and allows continuous improvements in the present quality of life of people with a low use of natural resources

Thereby leaving behind for future generations an undiminished stock of natural resources. In order to achieve these objectives, my Ministry has launched a number of national environmental initiatives such as preparation of the National Environmental Policy, National Forestry Policy, Forest Sector Master Plan, Biodiversity Conservation Action Plan and a six year development programme to ensure the sustainable use of renewable resources for the benefit of the present generation without undermining the interests of the future generations.

I invite every responsible enlightened citizen and individual to visit our website which has been devised to provide information on current activities conducted by the Ministry to be in harmony nature and to protect the environment and natural resource base of our country

Hon. Anura Priyadharshana Yapa.
Minister of Environment
